HA1 Task 1 – Technical Glossary


·         Pixel

Pixel art is a form of digital art, created through the use of raster graphics software, where images are edited on the pixel level. Graphics in most old (or relatively limited) computer, console, graphing calculator and mobile phone video games are mostly pixel art.

pixel art is mostly used in video games and other related things the the internet as it is made up of individual pixels as you see in the picture above of donkey kong this is a early form pixel art.

·         Colour Models – RGB and CMYK

RGB is based on projecting. Red light plus Green light plus Blue light all projected together create white. Black is encoded as the absence of any color.
CMYK is based on ink.  mix Cyan ink Magenta ink and Yellow ink, and you get black, although this format also encodes Black directly. White is encoded by the absence of any color.
·         Resolution

resoultion means that the better the resolution the better the quality where the lower the resolution the lower the quality. meaning that if you are playing a video game for example crysis in 1080p compared to a person who is playing it in 480p you will have better graphics.

most images that are on the interenet are raster images. raster images are commonly made up of pixels and are referred to as bitmap images, but the larger the raster image the more space it takes up. raster images are mainly used for such things as jpegs and gifs.

vector images are not made up of pixels like raster images instead vector images aare made up of paths which have a start and end point because vector images are not made up of pixels the image can be enlarged and not lose quality.

Refers to the capability of software or hardware to run identically on different platforms. Many applications for Windows and the Macintosh, for example, now produce binary-compatible files, which means that users can switch from one platform to the other without converting their data to a new format.
Cross-platform computing is becoming increasingly important as local-area networks become better at linking machines of different types. 

·         Compression - lossy and lossless

Lossless and lossy compression are terms that describe whether or not, in the compression of a file, all original data can be recovered when the file is uncompressed. With lossless compression, every single bit of data that was originally in the file remains after the file is uncompressed. All of the information is completely restored. This is generally the technique of choice for text or spreadsheet files, where losing words or financial data could pose a problem. The Graphics Interchange File (GIF) is an image format used on the Web that provides lossless compression.On the other hand, lossy compression reduces a file by permanently eliminating certain information, especially redundant information. When the file is uncompressed, only a part of the original information is still there (although the user may not notice it). Lossy compression is generally used for video and sound, where a certain amount of information loss will not be detected by most users. The JPEG image file, commonly used for photographs and other complex still images on the Web, is an image that has lossy compression. Using JPEG compression, the creator can decide how much loss to introduce and make a trade-off between file size and image quality.

·         Image Capture Devices – scanner, digital camera, tablet/smartphone

Image Capture is an application program from Apple that enables users to upload pictures from digital cameras or scanners which are either connected directly to the computer or the network. It provides no organizational tools like iPhoto but is useful for collating pictures from a variety of sources with no need for drivers.

·         Optimising

For imagery, optimisation involves choosing a suitable graphic compression format. Compression reduces the image filesize and consequently the time it takes to download and display in a browser. Common compression types include GIF, JPEG and PNG. Many compression formats reduce filesize by removing information from the image (downsampling). For example, the JPEG format reduces overall tonal range to reduce filesize—reducing the tonal range means that highlights and shadows become less pronounced.

Reducing the number, and filesize of the images can be a significant issue for websites with large subscriber bases such as news sites. Site owners are charged for the amount of information (data) downloaded from their sites (traffic). The more popular the site and larger the images the greater the traffic costs.

If you take the literal translation of what a digital asset is, then in essence it is any form of media that has been converted into an electronic binary format that has a value to a company.
